Summer Jobs for Teachers

Everybody loves summer. It is a time where people are mostly laid back, they go on holidays and enjoy some good times with friends and family. It is really a magical time, but for most underpaid teachers, this is the perfect opportunity to earn some much-needed cash on the side.

So, if you are a teacher, and are looking for ideas on how to make some extra cash, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. In this blog post, I will tell you about the many different options you have when it comes to summer jobs.

Let’s get started:

How do you find the right job for you?

Everybody knows that you are a teacher, and they probably will have plenty of ideas for you on what you can do when on holiday, but, it doesn’t necessarily have to be teaching. Yes, I will talk about tutoring over the holidays, but don’t limit yourself to teaching only. There are way too many options out there for you.

Tips that will help you land the right summer job

Here are some tips that will go a long way in ensuring you secure a place in your desired company;

List down all the skills you currently possess

You will need to assess yourself critically and identify what you are good at. Also, ask yourself questions such as; I’m I well organized? I’m I personable? Do I keep time? Do I possess excellent customer service skills? Etc.

This is because, as we mentioned earlier, a part-time holiday job doesn’t necessarily have to be a teaching job, look at what other qualities you possess, so you can try to find a job that will suit that particular skill.

Prepare a resume and cover letter

Once you identify your skills, it is time to prepare a resume that clearly showcases your strong points.

I would suggest that you do all of this early enough, before summer, so you can have secured an excellent job well in advance.

Show the employer why you are an excellent choice for the job

Once you identify the job you wish to do, it is time to sell yourself to the potential employer. You must write a resume that clearly showcases your best skills and abilities.

Ensure to connect these to the position that you want and to the organization

This is because the company is likely to receive lots of applications and they will be unwilling to select someone who lists their skills and did not go into details as to how the skills will be beneficial to the company.

Let the employer know that you are willing to learn and grow

Since you are a teacher and are probably venturing into a field you may not be familiar with; it is essential to let your new potential employer know that you would be willing to learn a new skill.

If you are applying for an entry-level position, let your employer know that you are eager to learn all there is about the job and thrive in it.

Start networking

Keep everyone you know in the loop, and engage them, so they can give you ideas on where you can find a good job. Send the resumes and follow up with them.

You need to network with people who either work in the field you want to join or are connected to that field. This will help you get a job much faster.

Offer to work on a trial basis, either for free as a volunteer or for reduced pay

This works. Trust me. Most companies may be unwilling to offer employment to someone without experience, but, if you propose to do the job for free so you can learn, they may reconsider.

For jobs such as real estate or customer service, this is a great way to get started, where you offer to work for a few months as a trainee so that you can learn the job.

Believe you can do it

This is the best advice you will receive. Sometimes even confidence alone can get you the job. Write a great resume, and go into the interview with certainty that there is nothing you can’t do, and if you do not know, you are willing to learn within the shortest time possible.

Here are some great Summer Jobs

Au pair

Au pair

If you are a kindergarten teacher and are looking for a way to make some money and travel at the same time since its summer, then, this would be a perfect option for you.

It is one of the oldest jobs that require international travel, and it is still an excellent option for anyone who loves children, is smiley, happy, and bubbly, plus, someone who doesn’t mind the occasional sick child.

The pay is great if you find a good enough family. Most people will look at families that want to travel with their children, and at the same time, they want to ensure that they keep their studies in check. The job comes with free room and board, which means that you do get to save a lot and go on vacation without spending a single cent of your money. What a sweet deal!

It is also an added advantage in this job if you happen to be good in foreign languages because most families that require an au pair is purely so they can teach their children how to speak a new language or teach them English.

You must also be willing to do a few odd jobs around the house, such as laundry for the children as well as cooking and picking them from school. A good au pair will occasionally be required to take the children to the park in order to play with them.

This is not an easy job, and so, you must be ready to work extra hard, especially with difficult children.

 Home care assistant
 Home care assistant

Many people actually do this kind of job, because it pays well. If you love caring for others and are looking for some extra cash, then, becoming a home care aid worker means you will be helping the elderly and the sick who are confined at home.

The kind of jobs you may be doing includes, administering medication, checking the blood pressure, checking the blood sugar, helping with some light physical therapy or even taking the patients for walks and outside for some sun.

This is a great summer job, plus, you get to set your own cost and hours.

You may think that you need to be qualified as a nurse or even health care professional, but no. It is not necessarily the case. Most families could actually be looking for someone to care for their aging parents or grandparents, and it is the best job for you to do over the holidays.

The best thing about it is that you do not have to work all day, and you can still get to enjoy the summer a couple of hours a day.

Working as a bill collector

Working as a bill collector

This must sound like a difficult job, but it’s really not as difficult as you may imagine. It is actually the perfect summer job for you.

There are plenty of bill collecting agencies being set up lately, and you really do not need to have any experience in order to do this job.

You must, however, be a good communicator and have excellent customer service skills. You will need to be firm now and then, so, the ability to remain calm under pressure would be an added advantage.

Now, if you are someone that knows how to deal effectively with uncomfortable situations, then, this is the job for you. And for a teacher, this should be easy-peasy, as you have been dealing with difficult children all year long.

It involves calling people and requesting them to pay their bills. It may not be a glamorous job, and most people will hate your guts, but it does pay well. Sometimes you may get discounts, depending on how many bills you have managed to collect, so, by the end of your summer, you may have quite a pot of savings.

Taking online surveys

This is a job where you get paid to give your personal feedback on products and services. It is actually a very simple and interesting job for a teacher over the summer because it will mostly involve very minimal movements, which means that you can actually do the job in the comfort of your own home.

There are very many companies and websites that are willing to pay people to take surveys, and I have talked more about this on my article – Apps that pay you to use them.

Essay reviewer

You may be surprised at the number of people willing to use the services of a good essay reviewer, especially if you are an English teacher.

This job is very easy, all you need to do is spend a few minutes per day evaluating essays and projects for university students and doing reviews for them and voila! You get paid for your services. This job makes very good money because you can charge what you like since there isn’t any specific rule or governing body.

In fact, this is the kind of job you can continue doing, even after you have resumed work after the holidays, as you can work part-time in the evenings, and get to make some much needed extra cash as a teacher.

Private Tutor

Private Tutor

Of course, I cannot finish the list without talking about tutoring, because it is, in fact, a job that must come easy for you.

Plenty of non-English speaking countries are desperately looking for tutors, who can teach their children and even adults English.

This is a great job because it has few qualifications, and almost anyone who is able to speak fluent English can comfortably do the job well. As an already established teacher, this is the perfect side gig for you, and a job that you can continue to do, even after you resume work.

Also, in some states in the US, the local government has allowed their kids to attend the online school, and this increases the teaching/tutoring opportunities for someone who wishes to work from home.

I have talked more about this on my article – Tutoring jobs. (Chris please link to this article, not published yet)

Online writer

This is the most popular online job, and most teacher will appreciate it so much as a side gig. If you are good at writing, then, you shall find that there are so many opportunities available for you online. In the above articles, I have not only explained to you how to work as a writer, but there are many different websites you can use to find work, which I have listed.

Get paid to shop and deliver

Most people love shopping, but they never have the time to do it. During summertime, as a teacher, you can opt to shop for people and get paid for it, since you are not busy at all.

There are actually many different apps you can use to do this job. Here are some of them;

Depending on where you are residing, with care.com, you can make $12.50 an hour, for simply shopping and delivering to your clients, which is a fantastic idea for someone looking to make some extra cash, and since you are home anyway, why not?

On this site, you have the opportunity to branch out and offer clients other services that are available on the website, which is fantastic, as it enables you to make much more money compared to someone doing deliveries only.

The only requirement they have for their employees is that you must own an iPhone or an Android-powered phone, and you must also have a considerable mode of transport such as a car.

They offer both part-time as well as full-time opportunities, which is great for a teacher over the summer.

For a teacher looking for a part-time job over the summer, this is a perfect gig. You can choose to either work as a full-time shopper or work part-time, so you get to enjoy some summer vacation still while still working.

The company offers flexible working hours and good enough pay.

This grocery service is owned by Target Corporation. They hire grocery shoppers for helping their clients shop for groceries online. You then deliver to the customer’s doorstep.

They pay their shoppers $22 per hour, which is a great paid, and you are able to receive your money on a weekly basis. If you have a smartphone, a reliable car, and strong interpersonal skills, you may be what they are looking for, and they will give you a great opportunity to make some good money over the holidays.

TaskRabbit:

This is what we call a “Jack of all trades.” It is an on-demand company that you can use to find gigs for furniture assembly, shopping, cleaning, etc. For someone looking to make some extra money during summer vacation, you are most likely to find something that can help you make as much money as you wish to make.

The best part about this company is that you get to set your own rates, and you can charge what you wish to your clients.

To start things off, you will need to register online, attend a short session where you shall be briefed on what you need to know, and then you are ready to go. The earning potential on this site is dependent on how hard you work, and how well you treat your clients.

Bombfell

This is a NY base clothing store. It is a fashion company that provides its clients with personalized shopping options by the use of online shoppers. They occasionally have many openings for online shoppers, who can help style their clientele.

The stylists who work from home are able to help clients select items from a large database, and once the client buys a product, your work is to deliver it to their doorstep.

You must, however, live within the tristate area, and occasionally, you must attend some mandatory training sessions that are normally hosted in the company’s headquarters.

This is actually the type of job that you can do, whether you are in school or on holiday.

 Dia&Co

Stylists from this company are normally in high demand. If you are working as a teacher, and feel that you have a fashionable side that you haven’t explored yet, this would be the perfect side gig for you.

Being a remote stylist means that you can work from whichever location, and offer fashion advice to clients of Dia&Co. If you wish to go a step further and offer delivery services, it would be great if you lived within the same location as the clients.

 Mac & Mia

This is an online kid clothing store that hires people to work as stylists. The position will require you to work independently, where you help kids, and their parents choose outfits for different occasions. You must be stylish and have great ideas.

Rocksbox

This is a jewelry company, and it allows its clients to try out and buy different types and design of jewelry at a very low monthly fee of $21. It is quite a good deal because you get even to check out designer products that you may be interested in.

You must live within the San Francisco area to work for the company, and it is a great side gig for a teacher.

Translator

If you are conversant with more than one language, then you can easily get a good job as a translator. This is a job that pays very well, depending of course on the needs of the client.

You must, however, have perfect mastery of the other language, including the pronunciations, the spellings and the ability to understand both written and audio messages that you may need to translate and convert into text.

One of the best companies to find work as a translator is Upwork. You can sign on to become a freelancer, and start browsing for jobs on the site.

Customer service rep

This is yet another great job that you can do in the comfort of your home as a part-time gig. All you will need is a fast internet connection and a headset.

Most companies have been outsourcing their customer service department for many years now. You may think that you are calling the customer service department in one of the states in the US, but you are speaking to someone in India.

Now, with the rise in online freelancing work, customer service can also be freelanced and done online. You can have your front office desk in someone’s home or even your sales department in a completely different location.

There are many programs available to companies that allow freelancers to receive telephone calls on their computers and conduct a sales pitch easily, without necessitating the use of an office.

These jobs may not pay much at first, but with time if you are experienced and constantly deliver high-quality work, you may end up being a very successful customer service rep.

Tech support specialist

This is similar to the customer service rep, but the only difference is that a tech support specialist is someone with technical know-how. They understand the technology and can be able to offer support to customers who call the technical team.

If you are a teacher who is very good with technology, then this is a very sweet deal for you, as it will be virtually effortless.

Some of the companies that may require these specialists include mobile phone companies, TV companies, cable installers, etc. They can guide you through the phone in case there are any problems with your devices.

Now, this is yet another job that can be outsourced and given to someone who is working from home. Companies can save on the cost of having a complete technical department that is much more expensive to maintain as compared to paying a work from home freelancer.

App Testing

App Testing

Have you ever heard of this job? There are virtually thousands of apps being developed daily, and these need people to test them out. This is where you come in.

A mobile app will go through very many stages of development before it is ready to hit the market. A developer will need to hire people who can test how the app is working, and provide them with feedback so that they can improve on their product.

Your work, if hired, will be to report on glitches, ease of use, and answer survey questions concerning the user experience and practicability of the app.

This is not a job that will require too much of your time, and you can make at least $10 for testing the app for a short period and answering the questions accompanying the app.

Travel agent

Becoming a work from home travel agent is very easy. I have talked about this in one of my blogs – (how to become a travel agent from home)

You will, however, need to attend a certified course in order to gain the skills necessary for you to become a dependable travel agent.

This is basically a sales job, and your work is to sell holidays to your clients, and also book for the plane tickets. If done well, this is a job that has the potential of earning a good amount of money, and you can be able to turn it into a career.

Data entry jobs

Online data entry jobs are very many, and there are also very many companies offering work to data entry clerks. This has got to be the simplest job on the internet, which requires no previous qualifications or experience.

In addition, it is easy to do, as you simply enter data mostly on excel sheets.

Conclusion

Most teachers I know don’t do it for the money. They tend to love what they do; the only problem is that teaching doesn’t pay that much, which is a great tragedy. I believe that teachers should be paid the most since they impact so much knowledge into the generation.

But, seeing as this is how things are, it doesn’t hurt to find something else you can do on the side, and one that will help you make some much-needed cash.

This is quite a diverse topic that cannot possibly be exhausted. I hope I have given you some great ideas that you can work on during the holiday season. These are not only part-time jobs but jobs you can keep doing all year round and make you some good money.

In fact, some people have been known to turn a part-time job into a full-time job, but this depends on how much you shall make, and whether or not you wish to keep teaching or not.

The only advice I can give you at this point is that; online jobs may be great, but they take time to learn and earn good money, and therefore, you shouldn’t be in a hurry. It is not an easy thing and you must be patient and willing to learn in order to become successful.
